Recycled Newspaper

Philippines

Item #s:7901430, 7904060, 7901450, 7918000

This innovative new process turns old newspapers into new and beautiful products by wrapping the paper into coils and forming them into spiraled square building blocks. These building blocks are then joined together with thread and/or glue to make the various items. All the products are then starched to make them hard and shiny. They have been tested and should stand up to heat and moisture that comes with average use.

Painted Cut Metal

Haiti

Item #s:8009000, 8009040, 8000020, 8009030

Some people in Haiti have found unique ways to make money by creating art made from recycled materials. One group of artists live in the village of Croix de Bouquets. They recycle old metal, 55-gallon drums by cutting them open and marking beautiful designs on the black metal with chalk. Using a hammer and chisel, they pound and cut through the metal to make designs. Some of the finished products are painted with bright colors as fish, animals, or even the bright colored taxi buses in Haiti, called tap-taps.

Kenya

Item #s:4120030, 4101690, 4112050, 4112220

What good is a recycled soda can? At Bombolulu Workshops, in Mombasa, Kenya, artisans make beautiful jewelry and ornaments from a number of recycled materials, including recycled bottle caps and aluminum cans. Bombolulu Workshop, located near Mombasa, Kenya, has a long tradition of crafting intriguing jewelry from recycled materials. Artisans from this group create Ten Thousand Villages popular Three Women Pins as well as earrings and ornaments, all from recycled soda cans. The artisans of Bombolulu are visually or physically impaired and would otherwise have virtually no chance of securing employment in the mainstream labor market. At Bombolulu, however, they are often able to earn well over the basic wage for the quality jewelry they produce.
