Nicaragua

Nicaragua is a Central American country slightly smaller than New York State. It lies between Honduras and Costa Rica. Civil war and economic mismanagement continued until 1990 elections. A recent free trade agreement with Mexico is expected to be beneficial to the economy, but may provide tough competition in the agricultural sector.

The people of Nicaragua have a rich tradition of handicrafts. Craftspeople have produced and thrived in this region for thousands of years. In the last two decades an economic recession has severely reduced local buying power and the tourist market has all but disappeared due to continuing violence in the country. With the new found stability, it is hoped this sector will rebound.
