![]() Kenya Kenya borders the Indian Ocean in East Africa and is a country slightly more than twice the size of Nevada. With Lake Victoria to the west and coastal plains to the east, much of the country has a temperate climate. To the north are arid grasslands, sparsely populated by tribal Masaii herders. Almost half the population is under 15 years of age and the population will double again in only 15 years. Tourists, who visit Kenya's big game parks and tropical beaches, provide an important source of revenue for the country. Kenya's people are a diverse mix of ethnic groups and religions. But political violence has damaged the tourist industry. The rains of El Nino ruined crops and damaged an already delicate infrastructure. For ordinary Kenyans, price increases and shortages of basic commodities, water and power have become normal while unemployment remains high. Kenya faces the challenges and concerns that accompany a rapidly growing population. Links to country facts and maps: |
